Receiver and transmitter
We will start off with taking a look at the receiver and transmitter components of the thermometer. It features a large backlit LCD display measuring at 1.5 x 1.3 inches. The controls of the thermometer are on the receiver remote, so you can adjust temperatures if you need to from the comfort of your own home. The device allows you to set alarms to let you know when the grill is too high, the grill is to low, and when the meat has hit a certain temperature. It also has a timer alarm. It can measure temperatures between 32 degrees and 572 degrees Fahrenheit, which is really hot!
The Tp-08 attaches to a belt clip or a stand so you can carry it on your person, or rest it on a table. A hanger clips on the back of the transmitter as well, allowing you to hang the transmitter from your grill or smoker. Above all, every temperature can be manually set to your needs, allowing you to cook your meat to absolute perfection.
If you register your product, ThermoPro offers a great 3-year warranty on the device. That is the longest warranty out of all the other competing wireless digital thermometer brands and goes to show how much they value us as customers.
Meat and grill probes
The TP-08 uses two different probes, one for the meat and one for the temperature of the grill. The meat probe is 6 ½ inches in length, while the grill probe is three inches. Both of these probes sport a 40-inch-long wire mesh cable that can withstand very high temperatures. The probes attach to the transmitter device and accurately read the temperatures of the meat and the grill.
What’s so great about the two different probes is that it’s a perfect thermometer setup for smoking meats. Any great pit-master knows that you shouldn’t be checking your food often at all, and this device helps you do that. With the proper thermometer for checking the temperature of the cooking environment, you will know when your grill has become too hot or too cold.
ThermoPro does a good job in handling any problems with the probes or devices. If your probes are ever damaged, you can simply call up ThermoPro and have them send you a new one, free of charge. They really do their best to take care of their customers.
The best feature the TP-08 has is the dual functioning thermometer alarms. The meat thermometer is programmed to set off an alarm when it reaches a certain temperature. Additionally, the grill thermometer sets off an alarm when the grill is too hot and when the grill is too cold. The TP-08 also has a built-in timer alarm that you can manually set. With these settings combined, it creates the ultimate meat smoking thermometer. With the TP-08 you won’t have to manually check your meat as often saving you precious cooking time.
The alarms and do their job properly and are easy to hear over everyday noise like a television or music. The TP-08 even plays an alarm when you go out of range of the transmitter, which is 300 feet. Most of us could still read the temperature from a neighbor’s house. Personally, I haven’t been able to get out of reach of the signal within my own property.
Ease of use
The TP-08 is quickly becoming a top seller because of its ease of use. The display on the transmitter will toggle back and forth between the two readings, and on the receiver, you can see both of the temperatures at the same time. The device displays temperatures in either Celsius or Fahrenheit. Additionally, all the settings you input will be saved when you turn it off, being restored when you go to use the TP-08 the next time.
The large screen and buttons simplify the whole temperature reading process by making the temperatures easy to see and the buttons easy to press. The buttons are located on the receiver device, so you can adjust temperatures and times from anywhere within the range of the transmitter and grill. Like previously stated, they are large and easy to press making this a nice feature when compared to the Maverick ET-733.
Setting times and temperatures are as simple as holding down one button to enter the settings and another to adjust the temperature. It has several different modes to choose from and the manual does a decent job at explaining how to use the ThermoPro TP-08. Most of us will have no problem getting the settings right after just a few minutes of handling the device.
What surprises me so much about the ThermoPro TP-08 is the quality in which it is built. It’s been dropped on the ground on multiple occasions and hasn’t had any issues. It can be left outside for days in the rain, mind you the batteries will be dead, but the darn thing still works when you replace them. It’s about time somebody made a product for people like us, that have so many other things on our minds and might just forget it outside.
It’s a very tough unit and has a rubber casing around it that can withstand quite an impact. The probes prove to be high quality as well, as they can withstand quite hot temperatures. Compared to the Maverick ET-733, the ThermoPro TP-08 wireless thermometer feels like it has a much higher manufacturing quality and for that reason, I have to give the ThermoPro TP-08 my vote.
The ThermoPro TP-08 accurately reads temperatures and gets these temperatures at a pretty impressive rate. We tested it out with a warm and cold cup of water and it took about 5 seconds for each reading to accurately adjust, and this was with a device one of us had lying around for a couple years.
The range of the wireless receiver is 300 feet, which is pretty awesome. That’s quite a lot farther than any Bluetooth thermometer can offer and more than enough range to use through your whole house. When tested both the receiver and transmitter showed the same readings at 250 feet away from each other.
The ThermoPro TP-08 comes with a robust warranty right out of the gate. Included on purchase is a one-year warranty on all parts and for just registering your product with ThermoPro, you upgrade that warranty to three years. ThermoPro also offers an extensive lifetime warranty on the probes, if yours ever become damaged. This is an amazing example of a company listening to its customers and providing an excellent solution that everyone can be happy with.
ThermoPro TP-08 vs Maverick ET-733
The Maverick ET-733 has been riddled with problems since release. A lot of people have complained about the probes breaking and haven’t had any luck getting them replaced. The quality of the ThermoPro TP-08 is visibly better than the Maverick ET-733.
The Maverick has two identical probes, where we know that the TP-08 has a meat probe and a grill probe. The probes with the TP-08 are more meant for smoking meats over grilling them when the temperature of the grill s really important. The specifically designed grill probe will give you a better reading of the ambient temperature in the pit.
Between the two different thermometers, The TP-08 is the cheaper option, but also has the highest quality, and is much easier to set and use.
The ThermoPro TP-08 should be on the wish-list of any grilling or meat smoking enthusiast. It packs a great amount of usability and convenience in a small package. Gone are the days when we had to check our meat temperatures manually, with more and more advanced devices like this coming out, soon we won’t have to touch anything at all! Maybe that’s just a pipe dream, but hey, technology is getting better and better every day.
I personally recommended this thermometer if you plan on smoking meats. It’s a great addition to any barbeque collection and will really make your life a lot easier while grilling. The most important thing to do while smoking meats is to enjoy it, and this handy tool makes that just a little bit more possible.
Where is it sold?
Amazon sells the ThermoPro TP-08 and it’s the best place to get it. You can take a look at some other thermometer reviews if you want, but for smoking meats, we think this model is the best bang for your buck.
